These healthy vegan garlic knots are fluffy, moist, buttery, and of course, have all the garlic flavor! They're pretty simple to make and have no dairy or eggs.
I didn't realize how important bread was to me until I ran out and literally had no idea what to eat for breakfast. For a week. I eat a lot of toast, okay?😅
The point is, I'm always up for bread no matter the variation. Yep, that includes cinnamon rolls and pretzels! I figured it was about time I posted a garlic bread recipe, arguably the best kind of bread.
But, we're making it a bit more fun by making garlic knots! Because fun shapes mean they taste better, of course.
This version is vegan and healthier than the traditional kind (not that there's anything wrong with the original)! They're actually pretty simple to make too. 🙂

ingredients in vegan garlic knots
- all purpose flour: also known as white flour, this is the best way to ensure light and fluffy garlic knots that aren't dense.
- white whole wheat flour: you can replace this with more all purpose, but it adds more fiber without altering the texture significantly!
- flaxseed meal: this is completely optional but another great way to add extra fiber, protein, and healthy fats to this recipe.
- olive oil: this is what gives moisture to the dough! It's also a great replacement for butter to keep this recipe vegan.
- dairy free milk: pretty much any milk will work! I used oat milk but you can even use dairy milk if you are not dairy free.
- sugar: yeast needs sugar to fully activate, so no artificial sweeteners! However, if you want to use honey or maple syrup that's totally fine.
- yeast: this is an essential ingredient in any bread for that classic texture.
how to make garlic knots
- In a medium bowl, mix the warm milk with sugar and add the yeast. The milk should be slightly warmer than room temperature; anything too hot or too cold will kill the yeast.
2. Leave the yeast to bloom for about 10 minutes. If it stays the same after that time, the yeast are dead and can't be used (raising or lowering the temperature won't help).
3. Add in the rest of the dough ingredients: all purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, flaxseed meal (if using), olive oil, salt, and garlic powder.
4. Cover the dough with a towel or wrap.
5. Leave to rise for about an hour--it should have significantly risen.
6. Remove the dough from the bowl and knead in more all purpose flour just until it no longer sticks--it should not be dry!
7. Divide the dough into 12 equal sections. Roll each into a string and tie a knot (see pictures).
8. Tuck the ends behind.
9. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic topping: olive oil, butter/olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and Italian seasoning.
10. Bake for 5 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread the garlic topping on and bake for an additional 4 minutes. Top with fresh parsley and enjoy!
